Well, We Warned You! UK’s Anti-Trans Stance Could Land it in Some Deep Trouble at the UN

The good folks over at the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) in the UK may soon find themselves persona non grata at the United Nations human rights discussions, thanks to their indefatigable efforts to uphold the outdated concept of “biological sex.

Leading the charge for this ideological throwback is Baroness Falkner of Margravine, the EHRC’s chief, handpicked by the conservative establishment. If you recall, she once faced accusations of workplace bullying, a scandal she only recently escaped. Lovely, isn’t it?

The latest drama started when Falkner offered advice, in her soi-disant wisdom, to the UK ministers. She proposed that the law should clearly define sex as biological to create more ‘clarity’ in issues regarding single-sex spaces. Uh-huh, she said that!

Now, after intensive lobbying by trans rights groups including Stonewall, the influential LGBT charity, the EHRC is slated for a special review of its international accreditation. If successful, this will strip the EHRC of its ‘A status’. Silencing them at the UN Human Rights Council and other UN bodies. Ironic, isn’t it?

Lady Falkner, in cahoots with the Tory Government, is known for downplaying the rights of trans people, a fact confirmed when she advised polishing the term ‘sex’ to mean ‘biological sex’. Her advice, which had pernicious implications for trans people, was met with outcry and her attempts to erode the rights of trans individuals were flagged at the UN.

A wake-up call?

Stonewall and other trans rights champions have been tirelessly working towards justice. Perhaps the EHRC’s special review is the wake-up call the UK government needs. Their stance on sex and gender has placed them on the international stage, facing disapproval from all sides of the political galaxy.

Sure, Falkner claims the EHRC intends to uphold the rights of everyone and not just those who shout the loudest. But saying one thing and doing another is a trait we’re all too familiar with, aren’t we?

As we wait for the results of the review, I guess we can just sit back, arms folded, smirking, and repeat the phrase that has been echoing around the trans rights community: “Well, we warned you!”
