The Telegraph has released an article titled ”There’s an inconvenient fact in the new trans data“. It is a very misleading article. Presented in a way that harms both young people and the trans community. I’ve taken apart the article to highlight how it misleads the reader.
It’s Not “A Fad”
The idea that the increase in diagnoses among teenage girls is due to a mass psychological phenomenon or “fads” is insulting. It undermines the real and deeply felt experiences of these young people. Yes, teenage girls can be more vulnerable to social pressures and mental health struggles. These vulnerabilities should not however be taken as indication that they are simply following a trend. Many of these young people have been struggling with their gender identity for years. Their diagnosis represents a moment of clarity rather than a passing influence. The suggestion that teenage girls are more prone to “fads” is completely dismissive of the legitimate struggles that many face. It doesn’t acknowledge the complex and multifaceted nature of gender identity.
Mental health comorbidities are not proof of a “wrong diagnosis”
Just because someone with Gender Dysphoria has mental health issues does not invalidate their gender identity. Gender Dysphoria exacerbates other mental health issues if left untreated. The condition is compounded by societal rejection, discrimination, and society not showing sufferers empathy. It’s not the identification as trans that causes mental health issues. It’s society not accepting their gender identity as real.
Trans people are not “failed” by medical professionals
The article ignores the robust and careful procedures in place in the healthcare system. In the UK, gender-affirming care is guided by protocols designed to ensure appropriate and informed treatments. The emphasis is on providing support, counselling, and a thorough assessment before any medical interventions occur. This ensures that young people are not rushed into decisions about their transition. Young people are carefully guided through the process and allowed to make informed choices about their futures. The harm is caused by the government not working to reduce wait times. Banning medical interventions like Puberty Blockers only further harms young people with gender dysphoria. There is no ethical reason for banning them. The ban is purely driven by anti-trans hate.
Trans identities are not “convenient labels”
Being trans is not a “convenient label” for vulnerable children seeking explanations for their struggles. This undermines the authenticity of trans identities. Being trans is not an arbitrary decision or a passing phase, but a fundamental aspect of who they are. Gender dysphoria is real. Many trans people experience significant distress because their gender identity does not align with their assigned sex at birth. Dismissing trans identities as convenient labels dismisses their lived experience. It is both cruel and heartless to invalidate the identities of trans individuals.
The rise in trans identification is not an isolated phenomenon
The article overlooks the fact that many adults are coming out as trans later in life. Societal acceptance of trans identities encourages people of all ages to explore and express their gender identity more openly. Gender identity is a complex, deeply personal aspect of human existence. Young people need our help and support to validate their identities. They do not need it to be called ”a fad” or a ”convenient label”. This language harms young people and should be called out and condemned.
The Telegraph continues to publish articles that have a clear aim. They aim to harm trans people by spreading misinformation and fear. Trans people don’t need this hostility. It’s important therefore to always be critical and mindful of the anti-trans bias present in their articles. UK legacy media is very determined to keep pushing an anti-trans narrative. Right-wing populism has unfortunately made it socially acceptable to punch down on trans people. Due to their tiny population and lack of power, trans people become an easy target of fascist oligarchs. Everyone needs to step up and call out the bigotry to help protect our now fragile democracies.
